Orthopaedic Trauma
Orthopaedic trauma is a branch of orthopaedic surgery specializing in problems related to the bones, joints, and soft tissues (muscles, tendons, ligaments) of the entire body following trauma. The main goal of this specialized area in orthopaedics is the healing of the fractured bones, as well as restoring the anatomic alignment of the joint surfaces to allow for recovery and return to maximum function of the injured body part.
Orthopaedic trauma care at Surgimed Hospital covers the spectrum of simple isolated fractures to severe life threatening accidents with multiple broken bones. Significant injuries with multiple broken bones, compound fractures and fractures near a joint, and fractures of the pelvis are more difficult to treat, and benefit the most from specialized care. Additionally, problems with healing including nonunions, infections (osteomyelitis) and healing with poor alignment (malunion) are often treated by fracture specialists.
Due to the nature of trauma cases, in addition to broken bones there are multiple other injuries to the chest, abdomen, nerves or blood vessels. A comprehensive team approach is essential for a satisfactory end results. Our orthopedists share strong working relationships with the departments of General Surgery, Plastic Surgery, Neurosurgery, Thoracic Surgery and Vascular Surgery. State-of-the-art techniques are used in the treatment of associated injuries to nerves and blood vessels and incidents involving soft tissue loss. Severe trauma frequently needs intensive care and even ventilator support (artificial breathing). Surgimed Hospital has well trained and qualified intensive care specialists and the elaborate equipment needed for such care. Timely repair of injured blood vessels have saved many limbs which otherwise would have been lost.

Arthroplasty and Joint Replacement

Arthroscopy and minimally invasive surgery

Furthermore, the close cooperation between the Spine surgeons and the Neurosurgeons is another reason for better outcomes.
Pediatric Orthopaedics
A child’s musculoskeletal problems are different from those of an adult. Because children are still growing, the body’s response to injuries, infections, and deformities may be quite different than what would be seen in a full-grown person. Two of our staff members have had postgraduate fellowship training in pediatric orthopaedics and are able to take care of all aspects of this special field of interest.
Children cannot always say what is bothering them, or answer medical questions, or be patient and cooperative during a medical examination. Surgimed Hospital’s pediatric Orthopaedic surgeons know how to examine and treat children in a way to help them be relaxed and cooperative.
Our doctors also appreciate the worry that goes with having a child with a musculoskeletal problem and they have experience in communicating with anxious family members.
Children with complex pediatric problems are best managed by a medical-surgical team approach. Pediatric Orthopaedic surgeons diagnose, treat, and manage children’s musculoskeletal problems, such as:
- Limb and spine deformities noted at birth or later in life (clubfoot, scoliosis, limb length differences)
- Gait abnormalities (limping)

- Bone or joint infections and tumors
Orthopaedic Oncology
Orthopaedic oncology is a multidisciplinary field that collaborates with our cancer center to provide coordinated multimodal therapy for primary as well as metastatic musculoskeletal tumors in adults and pediatric patients. Our Musculoskeletal tumor center is primarily focused on limb salvage for primary musculoskeletal tumors. Tumors of the spine are another area of focused interest for our diverse team. Furthermore, close coordination between the oncology department and the musculoskeletal tumor department is the key for good outcomes.
